Adoption Process

Our goal is to make sure every one of our dogs gets placed in the right home so it can be their forever home. We want you meet and take time with the dog, which is why we are flexible with meeting times.

The Adopter

The #1 reason that dogs are given up is due to "bad" behavior such as chewing and barking. Behavior like that usually indicates the dog is bored and has not received enough exercise and human interaction. We want to know that our dogs will receive the right amount of exercise and attention, and that you are matched with a dog that suits your lifestyle. When considering a dog, think about the amount of time you have to give to your dog. Do you have a fenced in outdoor area? If not, can you give the dog enough walks to keep both of you healthy and happy? We have a holistic approach to adoptions.

The Dog

All dogs will be up to date on vaccines, spayed/neutered and microcchipped. Be assured that we are 100% transparent about the dogs we have. You will know everything that we know about the dog's history and what we've learned while it's been with us. You will receive all your dog's records at the time of adoption.

Application

We have an application that all of our adopters complete. The information allows us to better know your background and environment, and make sure you and the dog are the right match.

The Fee & What's Included

Our current adoption fee is $300 for adult dogs, $350 for puppies, and $225 for senior dogs There is a $5 processing fee when paying with card. Every dog is spayed/neutered, current on their vaccinations, and microchipped. Adoptions completed with AARF include a PetSmart coupon booklet that includes a free bag of dog food and a free 30-minute PetSmart Training class (coupons are inside the booklet).

What our Fees Cover

We are often asked about the adoption fee for rescue dogs. Here's what goes on behind the scenes:

  • Most dogs come in with no history. Therefore, they need a full set of shots. Rabies shots must be done by a licensed vet, so there's the cost of a vet visit and exam. And they need Bordetella (kennel cough) and shots to guard against distemper, leptospirosis, adenovirus, parvo and other diseases.
  • Most of the dogs are tested for heartworm and if the test is positive, there are substantial vet fees involved. And trying to save a dog with Parvo begins with about $1000 in vet fees.
  • Dogs often come in with wounds or minor illnesses which require vet visits and medication.
  • Dogs with illnesses related to their homelessness and malnourishment are cared for by local vets who give us a discount, but the bills for a sick dog go up quickly.
  • Colorado regulations require that all rescues must be spayed or neutered; add to that the cost of post op medications for pain and antibiotics as needed.
  • Dogs coming in from out of state must have a health certificate signed by a vet which involves a charge.
  • We help out our counterparts in New Mexico and Texas and pay a transport fee for each dog to offset the cost of gas to bring them to Colorado.
  • We also put on miles getting dogs to vet visits, adoption fairs, picking up relinquished dogs, meet and greets with prospective adopters, grooming etc.
  • As much as possible, we try to use fosters to keep our expenses down and to socialize the dogs. Often, we have to kennel our dogs.
  • Our retail partners are more than generous in providing the food we need. We are beyond grateful for their help in this area. We couldn't keep going if we had to pay for food.
  • PACFA (Pet Animal Care Facilities Act) through the Department of Agriculture, our governing board) requires a substantial yearly licensing fee.
  • Leashes, collars, harnesses, crates, bowls, blankets, toys, treats, cleaning products….this list goes on!

As you can see, a lot goes into bringing your new best friend into your home. And every penny of your adoption fee goes directly to the welfare of the dogs. ❤️

What to Expect

Remember that some rescue dogs have been through a lot. There is always the possibility of behavior issues such as anxiety, chewing, potty accidents, and possible aggressive looking behavior all out of fear. Providing consistent praise, redirection, routine, and love will help make the transition easier on all of you. Always remember to be patient and give the dog time to adjust and learn your routine.
